Challis Walker Calandria

(American , b. 1912 - 2000 )

born and educated in New York City; at the age of twelve she had her first instruction in sculpture (outside of school) which caused her decision to enter art schools after high school graduation; attended the Art Student's League in New York City for two years studying sculpture with William Zorach; went to Paris in 1933; met her husband, Juan Jose Calandria, in Paris and he was later appointed Uruguayan Consul to New Orleans in 1941; recipient of numerous honors and awards in the New Orleans arts community and her paintings are in the public collections of the Civil, Federal and Supreme Court Buildings in New Orleans; Tulane University Law and Engineering Schools, New Orleans; Isidore Newman School, New Orleans; The New Orleans International Airport; and a portrait of Archbishop Philip Hannan which has been permanently placed in the ceiling of the St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans.
